How the Volunteer Journey Works

1. Apply

Submit your volunteer application.

2. Get to Know Us

Attend Horses & BEYOND! and learn about our mission, philosophy, and approach.

3. Enroll

If we're a good mutual fit, enroll in our Summer 2026 Volunteer Training Cohort.

4. Train

Participate in workshops, individualized mentoring, and hands-on learning designed to prepare you for your volunteer role.

Your Journey Begins Here

Your volunteer journey is designed to build your confidence, observation skills, and the knowledge and skills needed to safely and thoughtfully volunteer with horses at liberty. Below you’ll find the complete training roadmap and curriculum.

PHASE 1

Learn More About Us

Explore Beyond Liberty before applying. Discover our mission, philosophy, and sanctuary programs.
PHASE 2

Apply to Volunteer

Complete our online Volunteer Application form. Training is conducted in quarterly cohorts.

Applications are accepted year-round. Enrollment in a training cohort occurs only after we’ve had an opportunity to get to know one another through our required introductory experience.

PHASE 3

Visit & Connect

Attendance at our complementary introductory class, Horses & BEYOND! is part of our mutual interview process. It’s an opportunity for us to get to know you, for you to get to know us, and together determine whether Beyond Liberty is the right fit.

PHASE 4

Mutual Fit & Matching

We work to align your interest, skills, and availability with our current operational needs.
PHASE 5

Volunteer Training Weekend

All new volunteers participate in this two-session foundational training weekend, led by Certified Carolyn Resnick Method Instructor Hannah Francis of Free Spirit Stables.

PHASE 6

Practicum & Assessment

Apply your skills in real-time. Follow up the weekend training with direct practice sessions and evaluation.
